Lately, that’s what my brain sounds like.
“What’ll happen to the economy?”Zing!
“Is it really safe to travel again?”Zing!
“Will there be another season of Ozark?” Zing!
(Okay, the last one isn’t actually keeping me up at night, but you get the idea.)
We all share a lot in common these days, including a myriad of stress. Though we might each feel stressed, we aren’t all stressed in exactly the same ways.
During a crisis, your Dormant Advantage goes berserk.
Your Dormant Advantage is your most awkward, stressful mode of operating. When you’re forced to operate in the area of your Dormant Advantage, you’ll quickly become frustrated and discouraged. Ugh. Massive energy suck.
Unlike your Primary Advantage, which is your most energizing and productive mode, your Dormant feels draining and aggravating.
When you feel threatened, your Dormant Advantage can take over your brain’s control panel.
By understanding your Dormant Advantage, you can recognize what’s really going on under the surface.
For instance, if you have Dormant Passion, you probably dread schmoozing at networking events, and random chit-chat with strangers. You crave solitude and space to recharge. Too much contact feels smothering. For you, having a 6-foot radius around you didn’t seem so bad.
But during the pandemic, if you were stuck sheltering in close quarters with others, it wasn’t easy to find your much-needed solitude. No wonder you were feeling irritable, with all the constant togetherness.
Or maybe you have Dormant Trust and you were thriving with the lack of regular schedule that came with working at home? And now, the prospect of returning to the office is filling you with dread. When you’re suddenly forced into your Dormant mode, the activities that feel draining can be hyper-intensified.
We are triggered by specific and predictable situations. Our response may be different than that of others around us.
When you understand your Dormant Advantage, you can predict how you are most likely to feel paralyzed.
You can take steps to understand those fears and overcome them.
Once you can identify the type of situation that makes you most anxious, you can recognize what’s actually triggering the anxiety.
If you have Dormant Innovation, you’re unnerved by ambiguity. You dread not knowing what’s going to happen next.
What can you do to overcome that? Focus on what you CAN control. For instance, plan out your meal schedule including all ingredients. Set regular time to visit in person or virtually with friends. Stick to a workday routine, both at home and at the office.
If you have Dormant Passion, you want straight facts. Not how everyone feels about the facts. You dislike the social media outpouring of raw emotion (it all feels over the top). How to cope: Stick to a step-by-step plan to keep moving forward. How often should you immerse yourself in the headlines, versus being with family?
Here’s a handy chart, to understand each Dormant Advantage.
By identifying the ways we are naturally inclined to respond, we’re equipped with valuable tools to understand our internal dialogue and stay focused on our goals.
Do you have Dormant Alert, and you are dreading the prospect of going back to traveling for work, with all the required expense tracking?
If you’re Dormant Mystique these past two years of little in-person collaboration have likely been rough.
