Just about anything can become fascinating.
Our lives become fascinating when we experience them fully, and share our experiences with others.
Here's a little poem I wrote about what's been fascinating me lately...
Ode to Gluten
Oh my beloved Cinnabon,
how I miss thee,
Now that I must eat
All my food gluten-free.
Goodbye Pizza Hut, Auntie Anne's,
and pastry with brie,
Soy sauce and sushi,
I was your sworn devotee.
Al dente pasta,
and a hot Krispy Kreme spree,
Warm cookies made with chips
From chocolate Nestlé.
Oh, how I ate those with gusto,
My digestion carefree.
These delights made my tummy dance
a happy “yippee!”
Yet I began to wake in the morning
dragging oh so listlessly;
I moved through the day
Like a bloated manatee.
Finally, my doctor informed me
of a gluten allergy,
And now I understand why I’d run to the bathroom
A.S.A.P.
Wheat, I kiss you goodbye,
and sip herbal tea.
I’m learning new food rules…
(Who knew to avoid barley??)
Yes I’m fascinated by you, dear gluten,
And your whole grain family tree,
But I must abolish you from my diet
And say farewell, mon ami.
Now I resist my fascination
of the bread basket potpourri,
Because I finally realized this fascination
Comes with a discomfort guarantee.
At last, I’m clear-headed enough
to write this decree.
And share with you this
gastro-jubilee.
Now it’s clear that Italian and Chinese food
with my stomach disagree.
The proof’s in the pudding
(though that pudding’s gluten-free).
Can any of you who have Celiac share a source for good, flavorful recipes? Or alternatively good GF product brands? I'm in the process of being tested for it and have a very unfortunate feeling about what the results will be. 🙁
Thank you all!
Loved it! Brilliant. Saying goodbye to all animal products was the answer for my health issues. Gluten is no problem and is a mainstay of my whole foods, plant-based diet. Very clever way to share your life with us. Thanks for the shining example of putting our brilliance to work.
WOW, Sally! What a marvelous ode indeed, thank you very much! Oh-well, myself used to be a official "Celiac" after two chemotherapy mistreatments back in 1993. Three years ago healed myself with a fresh turmeric rhizome & DIY-powdered black pepper mix, all mixed respectively in ratio 5000 mg : 34 mg. Still eating every day a big soup spoon of my pure Nature powerful holistic mix. Yep, as raw as it gets harvested from my patio. This DIY-mix is also partially responsible for my reanimated pancreas as well. This one was even bigger surprise to me, because after my left brain stroke my pancreas got dead-killed, too. Which means, I am happily dancing because I am insuline-free, too!
Thus, remaining being joyfully fascinating that there's a non-pharmaceutical, i.e. a best alternative, cure for over 700 diseases known today! The choice is only YOURS! ♥♥♥♥♥ --PS: obviously all powdered spices bought in the store are just leftovers after extraction of its goodies...Also, when pills, pharma is using exclusively "standardized natural" curcuma and whatever else ingredients are inside means nothing else as a chemical-synthetic and non-working crap, of course.
It is an interesting perspective—what can become fascinating when you have to leave it behind! I remember writing similar "odes" about my old hometown, old friends, missed opportunities, and discovering new, fascinating details in the process. So true, Sally!
Though I gotta say, as soon as I saw it was about gluten, I thought, "oh man, even though it's not the primary point of sharing this poem, I bet people are going to share their thoughts and position statements about gluten!" 😉
I have been gluten free for 5 years and what a wonderful gift it has been. I have discovered new things to try that I never would have experimented with in the past. Embrace it! I try not to mourn what I am missing but try to be thankful that I have a choice to make every day to eat healthier and inform others.
Sorry - not fascinating. Also sorry there is misinformation in the comments about gluten. Non-celiac gluten sensitivity is real. Read the science. Tens of thousands of people reversing disease just from avoiding gluten. Not a trend. A real heath issue.
What a fun read Sally! Reach out if you could use some gluten-free food ideas; been separated from Cinnabons now for 9 years & have a good handle on best brands & creative cooking options. ~Angela
Nice poem, Sally. So you!! Keep on rocking in he free world!!
Great poem, but I hope you've given up Gluten because you're Celiac or happen to be one of the VERY FEW people that have Celiac type tendencies....
I have a friend that runs probably the best GF restaurant in Manhattan and there is constantly a discussion going on with people that have latched onto the marketing campaign that Gluten is bad for you. In reality, your body needs it! (Yes, you can cut down on carbs all you want as long as you still have some Gluten in your diet.)
Only a very few people really have an issue with Gluten. But for those that do, finding good tasting food when dining out is an issue. Hence the creation of a very few restaurants, like Bistango (@29th St) that started long before the fad to actually help people with Celiac and the related issues.
LOL - I'm singing the same ode....although sometimes those warm, chocolate chip cookies get in the way! Thanks for sharing, Sally. Put a smile on my face today!
